10 steps to increase your productivity

This is filed under Entrepreneurship simply because we all need this, and it doesn’t just fall into a bootstrapping category, but more of an “everyone” category. Every bootstrapper or entrepreneur we’ve come across has always talked about the need to find that extra 30 minutes each day, or that extra 1 hour on the weekends to finish something uber-important. Well, we wanted to compile some tips to increase your productivity.

  1. When working online, close down email, AIM, RSS, ect. These distract you from your daily work. Try to answer emails and read your RSS feeds in the morning before doing anything else, so they are out of the way for the rest of the day.
  2. Try playing some form of music. If you need to be upbeat for a project, throw on some hard rock or some hip hop music. If you need to be relaxed while writing (as I am doing now) throw on some sort of soft piano music, or light rock.
  3. Keep a blog or online journal to chronicle every milestone you come across, or simply to bookmark (of sorts) websites or tools you come across that you might need in the future. We do this with our case studies as well as our bootstrapping tools and tips.
  4. Take a break. Everyone wants to feel like working 20 hours a day non-stop is going to be the most productive way of working, but it is not. Trust us, it doesn’t work. Step away for 10-20 minutes, and do something non-work related (ie: EAT!)
  5. Exercise and Sleep properly. The right amount of sleep will help you be very productive, as well as exercising. When you exercise your body, you in turn will be telling your mind that you feel good, and when you feel good, you work good.
  6. Organize your office space. Do you really need 5 stacks of notebook paper, and three empty bottles of pop sitting next to your desk? Or do you need 200 pens/pencils in 5 cups across your desk? Probably not, so try to lose them, and get yourself more organized.
  7. Just Say No. Sometimes we want to please everyone in our business and our personal life and make promises and deadlines we know from the start that we cannot keep. Try to say no every once in a while, it will cut down the time you spend ‘rushing’ and will keep you more relaxed, and in turn, more productive.
  8. Get up early and start early. So, you think because you own your own business that you can sleep until 12 because, “hey, its my business and what is my boss (me) going to do? Fire me?” Well, guess what? You could lose your business by not treating it as a business. Waking up early will give you time while everyone else is asleep to complete some tasks that might require “quiet time”. Besides, when you start early, you can finish early, and in turn give yourself some rewards for doing so (late night movie with your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife, ect).
  9. Knock out the biggest problems first. This will give you a sense of “completion” and happiness that will in turn, give you more time and energy for the smaller tasks of the day.
  10. Turn off the TV. If an average person spends 4 hours a day in front of the television, then that means over a lifetime, 9 years of your life will be wasted. WHY? Turn the TV off and read. Reading is also good for your mind, which in turn, is good for productivity.
